An Inspector Calls Read the extract from 'The Factory Gates' (below). Compare how the writers present the power that some people hold over others in this extract and in An Inspector Calls. from 'The Factory Gates' (written for this paper, set in 1930s Yorkshire) Mr Haldane stood at the top of the steps under his umbrella, and the workers stood at the bottom of them in the rain. 'Times are hard,' he said. 'For all of us.' His coat had a velvet collar. 'From Monday, wages will be cut by one shilling in the pound. Anyone who does not care for the new terms is free to collect his cards.' Nobody spoke. Behind them the iron gates stood open, and beyond the gates was the street, and beyond the street were the men who had already collected their cards, leaning against walls with their hands in empty pockets. Ruth Barraclough, who was seventeen and had worked the looms since she was fourteen, felt her mother's hand tighten on her arm. She knew what the hand meant. Say nothing. But as Mr Haldane turned to go back inside, Ruth found that her voice had come out on its own. 'One shilling in the pound,' she said, quite loudly, 'is a loaf of bread a week.' Mr Haldane paused. He did not turn round. Then he went in, and the door closed, and the rain went on.
